  17. <p>     At long last it's official: Washington is a city beyond
  18. redemption. Last week, after a decade of collective meditation
  19. designed to lower the capital's crime rate and improve its
  20. quality of life, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has ordered his flock
  21. to give up and pull out of the place. From his European
  22. headquarters in the Netherlands, the bearded founder of the
  23. transcendental meditation movement declared, "Everyone should
  24. leave this sea of mud. People should move to a peaceful, neat,
  25. clean atmosphere." Oddly enough, the Maharishi did not include
  26. any specific references to Congress in his remarks.

  28. <p>     In the wake of the Maharishi's pronouncement, his
  29. remaining followers put their homes on the market and planned
  30. to move to Fairfield, Iowa, where both the organization's
  31. national office and Maharishi International University are
  32. located. City officials responded to the abandonment with a
  33. yogic equanimity worthy of the Maharishi himself. Declared a
  34. spokesman from the office of Washington's unruffled Mayor Sharon
  35. Pratt Kelly: "Peace be with them."
